Degree of Coffee

Degree of coffee is often heard in Tamil Nadu. Many people don’t know what is degree coffee and why degree?

In olden days many households in far south, particularly in Thanjavur & Trichy districts of Tamil Nadu, used lactometers to measure the density of milk to find out whether it had been adulterated with water.

The higher the degree while seeing the lactometer readings thicker was the milk. Therefore it was unadulterated. Coffee prepared out of this thick milk was called “degree coffee”.
